Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks and spending time with family over a nice dinner. Write about your most unforgettable meal.

Prompt Response:   Sadly, for Thanksgiving I don't really have a favorite meal I just eat whatever is on the table, nothing fancy. Even though I don’t have a special dish I look forward to, I still enjoy the simplicity of sharing a meal with my family. The food may be ordinary, but the time we spend together makes the day feel meaningful. For me, Thanksgiving isn’t about a particular plate it’s about the people sitting around it. Summary:  Today in class we read letters 41-45 and took a quiz on those letters. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

Prompt Response:   My teacher once unexpectedly shared a story about her father dying from stage 4 cancer, and it really stayed with me. Hearing it made me feel deeply sad, not only because of the loss itself but because I could sense how much it must have hurt her. I remember wondering how she managed to carry that pain while still showing up for us with patience, strength, and encouragement every day. Her ability to keep moving forward and still support her students showed me what resilience and dedication truly look like. Summary:  Today in class we continued reading The Color Purple and answering questions on Writable. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

These letters show how Celie learns from the people around her, even in small ways. Think of someone in your life who influences you in a positive, everyday way—a friend, relative, teacher, or teammate. Write about what you’ve learned from them and how their influence shows up in your daily life.

Prompt Response:   My 9th-grade biology teacher influenced me by making the subject clear and approachable. The easy-to-follow notes we took in class helped me truly understand the material instead of just memorizing it. She consistently encouraged me to do my best, reminding me that I was capable of more than I realized. That encouragement has stayed with me, and I still carry her message of always striving to do my best today. Summary:  Today in class we continued reading The Color Purple and started answering questions on Writable. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

Creating a video is more than just placing pictures together—it’s about capturing a feeling. Explain how you tried to bring your assigned letter to life in your Adobe Express video. What mood were you aiming for, and how did your editing choices help you communicate the message or emotion of the letter?

Prompt Response:   My video was about Letter 13 of the Color Purple, which introduces the abuse Celie faces at the hands of Mr. I tried to bring this story to life by focusing more on Celie's emotions and the atmosphere of their household. The song I chose encapsulated the sadness of the situation while also sounding ominous. I used the typewriter animation on the quotes I inputted to emulate Celie writing the letter.  Summary:  Today in class we watched our videos for The Color Purple letters. Reflection:  I got a better grasp for how my classmates interpret the parts of the book we have read so far.

At the end of Letter 21, Celie and Sofia share a rare moment of laughter that softens the tension between them. Write about a time when you and a sibling or family member shared an unexpected moment of joy after things had been tense or confusing. Explain how that moment helped bring you closer.

Prompt Response:   A time when me and a family member shared a moment of joy after things had been tense was when I hit my head on a slide and started bleeding a lot. Everything got stressful fast because my mom was trying to clean me up and find the right bandages. It felt scary and chaotic in the moment. But once things settled down, me and my mom started laughing about how dramatic the whole situation was. We joked about how clumsy I was, and it made me feel a lot less embarrassed. Even though it started out rough, it was nice to share that lighter moment with her. Summary:  Today in class we worked on our videos for the Color Purple. Reflection:  I got better reading analysis skills and summarizing skills.

Celie tells Harpo to “beat” Sofia because she believes that’s how men control women, but this advice causes pain and conflict. Think about a time when someone gave you advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong. How did it affect your situation or relationships? What lesson did you learn about thinking for yourself?

Prompt Response:   A time when someone gave me advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong was when my friends told me to take precalculus. They kept saying I should take it with them because it would look good and that I’d get the hang of it easily. For me, that advice ended up being wrong because the class didn’t fit the way I learn, and it added more stress than it was worth. I learned that just because something works well for someone else doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for me. I should trust my own instincts when making decisions about school. Summary:  Today in class we read more of The Color Purple and started working on our videos for our assigned letter. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension skills and analysis skills.

Letters 11–16 show how relationships can be full of misunderstanding and pressure. Harpo wants love, but he also wants power. Sofia wants freedom, not control. Reflect on a time when someone’s desire for control hurt a friendship or relationship. What advice would you give to Harpo or Sofia if you could?

Prompt Response:  A time when someone’s desire for control hurt a friendship was when a guy I thought was my friend tried to pressure me into stealing. He kept pushing the idea and acted like I had to go along with it to stay cool with him. It made me realize he wasn’t thinking about me at all—just what he wanted. I would tell Harpo that if someone truly cares about you, they don’t try to force you into doing things you know are wrong. Real friends respect your choices, and if you feel like you have to be controlled or pressured to keep the relationship, then that connection isn’t healthy for either person. Summary:  Today in class we read and discussed letters 11- 17. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

What do you want to know more about in Letters 11 - 17?

Prompt Response:   I’m interested in what happens to Nettie after she leaves because so much about her life becomes a mystery. We don’t know where she ends up, who she meets, or what challenges she faces once she’s away from Celie. Since her letters never reach Celie, it makes me wonder what she’s been trying to say all this time and how different her world might look now that she’s no longer living with the same people who hurt her. I’m curious about how she’s growing on her own and whether she’s finding safety, education, or new opportunities. I also wonder how her experiences away from home will shape her future and what she might eventually reveal if Celie ever gets to hear from her again. Summary:  Today in class we read and discussed letters 11- 17. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

In letters 6 -10, we see how Celie starts noticing the strength of people around her, like Shug Avery’s independence and confidence. Think about someone in your life who inspires you to be stronger or more confident. What qualities do they have that you admire and try to learn from?

Prompt Response:   My friend Donovan really pushes me to grow. He’s confident in who he is and isn’t scared to speak up, no matter the situation. He connects with people so easily, and I respect how natural he is in any social setting. When he cares about something, he puts real energy into learning about it, and he loves sharing what he knows. He can make even the most random topics sound exciting. Summary:  Today in class we read Letters 6-10 and answered discussion questions. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension and analysis skills.

After reading the first five letters of The Color Purple, reflect on your thoughts and emotions as you experienced Celie’s early voice and struggles.

Prompt Response:  When we read the first five letters of The Color Purple in class, I was surprised by how honest and direct the writing was. The style felt powerful and intentional. Because it’s written in the voice of a 14-year-old girl, it feels very real and emotional. Even though the story is sad, I’m interested to see how it continues. Summary:  Today in class we answered and discussed pre-reading questions and began reading The Color Purple. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension, writing, and discussion skills.
