Celie tells Harpo to “beat” Sofia because she believes that’s how men control women, but this advice causes pain and conflict. Think about a time when someone gave you advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong. How did it affect your situation or relationships? What lesson did you learn about thinking for yourself?

Prompt Response: A time when someone gave me advice that sounded right at first but ended up being wrong was when my friends told me to take precalculus. They kept saying I should take it with them because it would look good and that I’d get the hang of it easily. For me, that advice ended up being wrong because the class didn’t fit the way I learn, and it added more stress than it was worth. I learned that just because something works well for someone else doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for me. I should trust my own instincts when making decisions about school.

Summary: Today in class we read more of The Color Purple and started working on our videos for our assigned letter.

Reflection: I got better reading comprehension skills and analysis skills.

As Celie’s world expands in these letters, she begins noticing new things about the people in her life. Write about a moment when you suddenly noticed something funny, shocking, or unexpected about someone you see every day (a family member, a classmate, or even a teacher). How did that new discovery change the way you saw them?

These letters show how Celie learns from the people around her, even in small ways. Think of someone in your life who influences you in a positive, everyday way—a friend, relative, teacher, or teammate. Write about what you’ve learned from them and how their influence shows up in your daily life.

Blake uses the chimney sweepers to expose how society ignores suffering. Reflect on a time when you noticed someone being treated unfairly or saw a situation that didn’t seem right. How does this experience connect to the emotions or ideas expressed in one or both poems?
