Prompt Response:   As someone who is also from Honduras, I understand what Cofer is saying that the Island "travels" with you wherever you go. Analyze how you’ve adapted to the demands of this course over the past week, and evaluate one strength and one challenge you anticipate as we progress, justifying your insights with personal examples.

Prompt Response:  I've adapted to the demands of this course over the pask week, by having a schedule of when work is due and I just pay attention in class. One strength I have is good note taking but a challenge I may anticipate as we progress is reading out loud as I stutter and get anxiety. I've always had a struggle during presentations my whole life as english is not my first language and I fear I could make a mistake and later be judge.  Summary: We worked on our cultural mask in class and watched a movie of a girl finding who they were. Reflection:  I will continue to do my best this year even through obstacles.

Describe how gender roles or patriarchy influence your identity?

Summary:  In  "Girl"  by Jamaica Kincaid, a mother gives her daughter a long list of rules on how to behave and fulfill traditional female roles. For example her being a female can't squat down to play marbles and she has to be responsible for doing the chores around the house. Reflection:   Being a guy, I’ve definitely felt the pressure to act a certain way  like always being tough, not showing emotions At the same time, I know being male comes with certain privileges in a society shaped by patriarchy. I try to stay aware of that and not let those roles define who I am.

Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt Response:   Summary:  In "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, a mother gives her daughter a long list of rules on how to behave and fulfill traditional female roles. The story highlights the cultural expectations placed on young women and how these roles are passed down. Reflection:   This reminds me of my own culture in Honduras, especially during La Cena de Nochebuena (Christmas Eve dinner). In my family, everyone has a role woman usually cook, kids help out, and elders lead prayers. Like in the story, there are unspoken expectations, especially for females. But unlike the strict tone in "Girl," our family tradition feels warm and full of love, showing that roles can also bring people closer.

Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt Response:   Summary:  In Girl, Jamaica Kincaid portrays a mother giving her daughter a list of instructions that reflect the cultural expectations placed on women in their community. These instructions show how heritage shapes behavior and daily life by teaching what is proper and how to navigate social roles. Reflection:   My Hispanic heritage shapes my daily expectations in ways similar to the girl in the story. Growing up, my family taught me values like respect for elders, the importance of family, and how to carry myself with dignity.
