Judith Ortiz Cofer says, “The Island travels with you.” What part of your culture, family, or identity do you feel “travels” with you everywhere you go?

 Prompt Response: As someone who is also from Honduras, I understand what Cofer is saying that the Island "travels" with you wherever you go. Everywhere I go, people will still look at me the same way based on how I look. Not just my skin color, but also by what I wear and how I carry myself. No matter how much I feel like my identity has changed, I will still be the same person no matter what. 

Summary: Today, we read a short story called "I Just Met a Girl Named Maria" and listed the stereotypes the author faced in the story.

Reflection: Everyone experiences some sort of stereotyping in their life. Looking at this story of this woman being stereotyped all her life and the things she has lived through, it makes you really think about how people treat Latin American women in our society, whether you can relate to it or have an understanding of it.

  Prompt Response:  When we read the first five letters of The Color Purple in class, I was surprised by how honest and direct the writing was. The style felt powerful and intentional. Because it’s written in the voice of a 14-year-old girl, it feels very real and emotional. Even though the story is sad, I’m interested to see how it continues. Summary:  Today in class we answered and discussed pre-reading questions and began reading The Color Purple. Reflection:  I got better reading comprehension, writing, and discussion skills.

Prompt: Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

  Prompt Response:  Watching my mom deal with the loss of her older family members was a difficult but necessary wake-up call that life is fragile and temporary. It forced me to finally face a fear I'd carried since childhood: that my time with my grandparents and older relatives is limited. Now, instead of avoiding that difficult truth, I use it to make sure I never take a single moment for granted when we are together. Summary:  Today in class we were introduced to the play Fences and began reading it. Reflection:   I got better skills reading out loud and understanding of play structure.
